What can you do to safeguard PHI and protect the privacy of our patients?

In this section, we will explain some practical steps that all of us must take. Most are common sense, but we must be careful all the time and not forget them.

For example, we must not leave papers with PHI lying around on our desk. Someone walking by may know a patient on a list we are working or on a claim form we forgot to file. You may want to keep papers in a folder to make it harder for someone to accidentally see the PHI on papers inside. Keep papers filed away when you are done with them.
